August 24th marks Ukraine's Independence Day, celebrating both our freedom and resilience. For Ukrainians in the UK, this is a crucial day to honour our heritage and unity. We are proud to participate in the Festival of Sound to commemorate this significant occasion.

About the event

The red viburnum, or "kalyna" in Ukrainian, is a cherished national symbol of Ukraine, representing resilience, beauty, and the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people. Its bright red berries are a common motif in Ukrainian folklore, songs, and traditions, symbolizing the country’s rich cultural heritage.

The Ukrainian community in Thanet was established in 2022, following the arrival of the first refugees from Ukraine, predominantly women with children. With the invaluable support of the local council and the Salvation Army, we organise community meetings where we support each other during these challenging times, forge friendships, share experiences, and educate our children.

We are profoundly grateful to the British people for their steadfast support and generosity. Eager to share our heritage, we arrange cultural events and have formed a Ukrainian choir. Additionally, we prepare traditional dishes for charity sales to raise funds for those still in Ukraine. While we are here, we…
